WHO WE ARE
Borders & Borders, PLC is a casual but professional law firm. David Borders started the firm in 1971 and quickly focused his attention on the area of real estate law. Within a short period of time, he was representing dozens of lenders and hundreds of individuals at closings, providing detail-oriented, efficient service in a friendly environment. David’s reputation as a kind and competent closing attorney quickly grew.
In 1989 and 1991 respectively, David’s sons, John and Harry, joined the firm. While expanding into some other areas of law, John and Harry have retained the firm’s focus on real estate closings. Today, the firm has eight attorneys, all of whom work predominantly with closings.
Giving back to the community is a distinguishing feature of our firm. As individuals, we have volunteered with many non-profit organizations, serving on the boards of director for several charities. As a company, we have provided thousands of hours of pro bono work to individuals and non-profit organizations in Louisville. Borders & Borders has closed, for free, every single Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville loan since Habitat’s inception. To date, that’s been more than 500 homes. Our work with Habitat led to our being awarded the 2007 Governor’s Award.
At Borders & Borders, we recognize that a house purchase is the biggest financial decision in most people’s lives. From start to finish, we make every effort to treat our customers and clients with the respect commensurate with such an important purchase.
WHY AN ATTORNEY
In Kentucky, anyone can handle a real estate transaction. No license is required, and no state or local agencies oversee the closing process. In fact, Kentucky requires more training and licensing for cutting hair than for handling millions of dollars in escrows for closings. We believe that it is critical to have attorneys involved in the sale and purchase of real estate because many legal issues do, or should, arise that require the education and experience of an attorney.
If issues arise as to survey defects, title defects, terms of mortgages, or the manner in which purchasers should hold title to real estate, only a licensed attorney is qualified to handle those issues. Rather than having to hire an attorney for each party, these issues can arise and be handled from the closing when you have an attorney present. And if separate, individual representation is advised, our attorneys are also qualified and trained to refer you to another attorney.
Finally, as attorneys, we are required to treat all parties with honesty and fair dealing; a non-licensed closing agent does not have that requirement. At Borders & Borders, at least one attorney is involved with every transaction. When you choose Borders & Borders for your closing needs, you’ll see the difference an attorney makes!
